The company, which employs 35 staff at its headquarters in Heywood, Greater Manchester, has boosted annualised turnover by £500,000 after buying Advanced LED Technology, which is based in Newcastle upon Tyne.GJD managing director Mark Tibbenham, 51, said the company would be investing to increase production capacity at both of its sites. Advanced LED Technology, which was owned by Keith Fenwick, designs and manufactures infra-red and white light illuminators to enable CCTV cameras to see in the dark.
GJD specialises in the design and manufacture of detectors which trigger CCTV cameras when they pick up movements. The firm also sells control devices that switch on security lights, and other CCTV Equipment and security accessories. Mr Tibbenham said: “The combination of detection and illumination is a strong market proposition. Both businesses are committed to innovation, quality and service, and supply complementary products.”
GJD itself is on track to achieve turnover of £3.5m in the 12 months to September, up from £2.9m. Mr Tibbenham said he is seeking rapid organic growth to reach his £10m goal, and he has lined up an investment programme for the firm’s research and development and sales operations. He bought the business in 2004 from founders Gilbert and Jayne Davies and he has a 57 per cent stake.
When he took over, GJD – which was established in 1983 – was turning over £900,000 and employed 14 staff. Since then, it has built its export market to 20 per cent of overall turnover, supplying CCTV installers worldwide with its D-TECT, Opal and Elite ranges. It has a sales office in Singapore and distributors across the globe. Its detectors are positioned around the perimeters of commercial premises and private homes. When they detect movement, they trigger the cameras to start recording, and they can be connected to loud speakers and alarm panels to sound a warning in the premises.
Advanced LED Technology is GJD’s first acquisition. Mr Fenwick said: “Teaming up with GJD provides the opportunity to further enhance our production, research and development, quality, purchasing and sales activities to deliver world-leading products and customer support. Both companies share many common goals.”
